Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, has made its way to Salisbury University. The student-led Pickleball Club, founded by Lindsay Kenna, is introducing more students to the sport while fostering a strong sense of community on campus.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It is played on a smaller court with a lower net, using solid paddles and hard plastic balls. The game can be played in singles or doubles and is known for being accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.
Growing Popularity at Salisbury University
Lindsay Kenna, president of the Salisbury University Pickleball Club, describes pickleball as the fastest-growing sport in America. She estimates that about four million people are playing nationwide, which inspired her to create a club dedicated to the sport on campus.
“I love seeing the people who show up to practice and enjoy the sport [just as much] as I do. It’s just as much a social event as it is a sport, and the amazing people are half the fun.” – (Lindsay Kenna)
A Welcoming Space for Beginners
The club is not only for experienced players but also welcomes newcomers who are eager to learn. Kenna emphasized that the club’s leadership team is dedicated to teaching new players and helping them develop their skills.
“Our executive members are all proficient at the sport and have coached a multitude of players from beginner to intermediate, improving basic skills and strategy. Any beginner entering the club will find a welcoming and fun environment.” – (Lindsay Kenna)
Community Engagement and Expansion
The Salisbury University Pickleball Club is actively working to grow its presence on and off campus. Club members have participated in events like Relay for Life and involvement fairs, as well as volunteered at local pickleball tournaments and charity games.
