Wellesley Plans Pickleball Expansion with Hunnewell Court Renovations

Wellesley Plans Pickleball Expansion: The Wellesley Recreation Commission has endorsed a proposal to renovate the Hunnewell tennis courts, which includes converting one court into three pickleball courts. The plan, led by the Natural Resources Commission (NRC), aims to address the growing demand for outdoor pickleball while minimizing noise concerns for nearby residents.

The proposed project, sponsored by the Board of Public Works, will be presented at the Annual Town Meeting. In addition to adding pickleball courts, the plan includes lining the hitting wall court so it can double as a pickleball court.

The Hunnewell courts, located along Washington Street, are on land managed by the NRC. “This is a compromise between trying to meet the needs of all the various users,” NRC Director Brandon Schmitt said.

Balancing Tennis and Pickleball Demand

A key concern is how Wellesley High School’s tennis teams will adjust to losing a court. However, supporters argue that the addition of dedicated pickleball courts is a forward-thinking move, as high schools are beginning to form pickleball teams.

Recreation Commission Chair Paul Cramer requested assurances that soundproofing measures be included to reduce noise impacts from pickleball games. Currently, there are no plans to change the court reservation system, though a fee would continue to apply for night use.

Addressing Pickleball Growth

With plans for pickleball courts at the Morses Pond parking lot stalling, the Hunnewell project is the latest attempt to meet the town’s increasing interest in the sport. The proposal seeks to balance recreational needs while ensuring the courts remain accessible for tennis and pickleball players.

Future Steps

The project’s approval at the Annual Town Meeting will determine whether renovations proceed. If passed, the town will move forward with construction plans and implement measures to reduce noise for surrounding homes.
