Bridgeport’s Pickleball Courts Ready for a Big Spring Season

Bridgeport’s Pickleball Courts: The Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for a packed spring season, with increased activity across its parks and upcoming improvements. Director Joe Shuttleworth said playgrounds, trails, and sport courts are already seeing more visitors as the weather warms, with major projects set to enhance the parks further.

Parks Open Year-Round

Bridgeport’s parks remain open throughout the year, though usage rises with warmer weather.

“The majority of our parks are open year-round. The usage picks up with the warmer weather. All of our walking trails are open now, but they tend to be more popular when the weather breaks.” – (Shuttleworth)

Playgrounds and picnic areas are also available year-round but attract more visitors in the spring. The city’s pool remains closed until summer, he noted.

Playground and Pickleball Expansion

A key improvement coming to Compton Park is a new playground.

“The park itself is still open. There’s still some features there. There’s a full basketball court, the pickleball court, and the walking trail.” – (Shuttleworth)

The new playground equipment should arrive in six to eight weeks.

“As soon as I can get it installed, it would be ready. I predict it’s going to be early summer when we have that back in place.” – (Shuttleworth)

Shuttleworth expects the pickleball courts, which opened last year, to remain a top attraction.

“The sport courts are pretty popular. Especially the pickleball this year, with it opening toward the end of last year. It got tremendous use. We predict it’s going to be busy there again as well.” – (Shuttleworth)

New Inclusive Playground and Spring Activities

On April 12, the city will open a new inclusive playground at the Bridge Sports Complex.

“April 12 is our goal. That’s the opening day of Challenger Baseball, which is a division of Little League Baseball geared for children with physical and mental disabilities.” – (Shuttleworth)

Most of the playground will be ready on time, but one section may be delayed due to material shortages. Other parks will also see increased activity, with Bridgeport Girls Softball League and soccer teams starting practices.

“At our city park, the Bridgeport Girls Softball League gets hosted down there. They’ll start practicing some. Soccer will also be held down there.” – (Shuttleworth)

Preparing for Summer

As spring transitions into summer, the city will begin preparing to open its pool.

“When we get closer to summer, we begin the process of getting the swimming pool ready for the summer season.” – (Shuttleworth)
