Augusta Weighs 48-Court Pickleball Complex Amid Soaring Demand

Augusta Weighs 48-Court Pickleball Complex: Augusta city leaders are reviewing a proposal for a new tennis and pickleball facility in west Augusta, featuring 48 pickleball courts. With the sport’s rapid growth and long wait times at local courts, officials are considering whether public funding should be involved.

Pickleball Boom in Augusta

At Montclair Pickleball Courts, players often wait to get a match.

“There’s like 30 people waiting to play on a busy weekend, so definitely pickleball is a growing sport – fastest growing sport in the country,” (Peggy Greco, a member).

Commissioners recognize the trend and see pickleball as part of a more active and connected community.

“We always talk about walkable communities and what that looks like, trails and biking, so pickleball is one of those things and it is the new craze,” (Commissioner Stacy Pulliam).

Funding Questions for the Proposed Facility

While city officials like the idea, some believe Augusta should not fund the project alone.

“I like it. I want to see what we could do, but I don’t want us to put all of the money in it,” (Commissioner Francine Scott).

Commissioner Catherine Smith Rice sees the project as a positive step.

“I think it would be a good idea. What’s it going to hurt? If anything, it’s going to be a win-win for all of us,” (Catherine Smith Rice ).

Local players also support city involvement in expanding pickleball facilities.

“There’s 400 members here and there are people waiting to get in. Yes, it’s thriving, so it’s a good thing and I think the city should be involved,” (Dave Hyams).

Next Steps for the Proposal

Augusta’s evaluation committee will conduct a financial analysis of the plan and present recommendations to city commissioners.
