Pine Lakes Country Club Pickleball Vandalism: Authorities are investigating a case of vandalism at the Pine Lakes Country Club’s pickleball courts in North Fort Myers, where antisemitic and homophobic messages were discovered over the weekend. The incident also involved a small fire, raising concerns among residents.
Hate Symbols and Fire Reported
Residents found offensive graffiti, including antisemitic symbols and homophobic slurs, on the courts and a nearby shed. Some believe the vandalism may have been a targeted attack, as gay couples frequently play pickleball at the club.
“There are actually a few gay couples that also play daily,” said a tipster. “So to me, it’s targeted. They tried to burn the shed down.”
In addition to the graffiti, staff discovered early Sunday morning that the mesh screening around the courts had caught fire. Firefighters from North Fort Myers quickly extinguished the flames. Nearby, items from a cupboard were found scattered in the parking lot.
Damage and Investigation
Staff estimate the cost of repairs will exceed $1,000, not including resurfacing the pickleball court, which sustained fire damage.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has launched an investigation and released images of the vandalism to WINK News.
“1st Precinct Crime Section Detectives are currently investigating a criminal mischief incident at the Pine Lakes Community,” LCSO stated. “We are following all leads, locating and reviewing surveillance video, collecting evidence, and speaking with witnesses. We take any criminal mischief act seriously and have zero tolerance for incidents of this nature.”
Deputies have increased patrols in the area as the investigation continues.
Community Concerns
The vandalism has left residents frustrated and concerned about safety. Cleanup efforts are already underway, but the damage serves as a reminder of the impact of hate crimes in communities. Authorities encourage anyone with information to come forward as they work to identify those responsible.
