Atlantic Pickleball Courts Proposal: The Atlantic Park Advisory Commission has approved a proposal to explore a pickleball project in collaboration with the Atlantic Community School District. Council Liaison Mike McDermott will discuss the idea with school officials at their next meeting in March to determine if they are willing to share resources for the project.
Potential Pickleball Courts at Washington Elementary
During Wednesday’s meeting, the commission discussed adding pickleball courts in Atlantic. One option is to convert part of the tennis courts at Washington Elementary for pickleball. McDermott believes that a partnership with the school district could help split the costs, making the project more feasible. If the school does not agree to collaborate, an alternative plan remains under consideration.
Previously, commission member Ali Pieken suggested replacing one of the basketball courts at Sunnyside Park with four pickleball courts. This option would require the city to cover the entire cost, but it remains a viable alternative if the school partnership does not move forward.
Funding and Court Repairs
In addition to the pickleball discussion, McDermott presented a bid for painting and repairing cracks in the tennis courts at Sunnyside Park. The bid was approximately $60,000, and McDermott noted that the city could likely secure $30,000 in grant funding to help offset costs. The commission approved the bid, moving the project forward.
Future Steps and Impact
The decision to explore a school partnership could benefit both the city and local students, providing additional recreational opportunities without the city bearing the full cost. If the collaboration does not proceed, the Sunnyside Park option will be reconsidered. The commission will revisit the topic after McDermott’s discussion with the school board in March.

Council Liaison Mike McDermott will discuss the plan with school officials in March. The commission also approved a $60,000 bid for tennis court repairs at Sunnyside Park, with potential grant funding covering half the cost.
