The Eagle River Pickleball Association (ERPA) has withdrawn its request for a public hearing on its proposal to develop a 12-court pickleball complex behind City Hall at 525 E. Maple St. The hearing was originally scheduled for March 6 at City Hall but was canceled after ERPA made its decision on March 3.
Proposed Complex Features and Benefits
The proposed facility would have met USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) standards and included safety fencing between courts, improved parking and traffic flow, shade structures, and seating with a designated 12-16’ viewing area.
ERPA also planned to introduce additional recreational activities in the future, such as basketball and volleyball courts, cornhole lanes, and a pavilion.
The organization emphasized that placing the complex downtown would have benefited local businesses, increased city revenue, and freed up space at Riverview Park, allowing for an expanded playground and basketball courts.
Concerns Over Location and Costs
Despite ERPA’s commitment to funding the project, concerns arose about the overall cost of construction and long-term maintenance.
Opposition from residents in the surrounding single-family neighborhood focused on potential traffic congestion, increased noise levels, and the impact on an existing playground and snow storage site.
Decision to Withdraw Public Hearing Request
Due to these concerns, ERPA chose to withdraw its request for a public hearing just days before the scheduled meeting. It is unclear if the organization plans to revise its proposal or pursue an alternative location for the complex in the future.
