Pickleball, originally invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, has surged in popularity across the United States and beyond. For many Doane students, this tournament was their first time playing the sport, making it a competitive and learning experience.
Matches followed official pickleball rules, where teams could only score when serving, and the first team to reach 11 points won each round.
Tournament Champions Crowned
After a series of exciting matches, Maria Purizaca (sophomore) and Jose Purizaca (junior) emerged victorious in the final match with an 11-7 win. Their victory earned them a Casey’s gift card as the tournament prize.
A Growing Interest in Pickleball
The event was met with enthusiasm from students, many of whom were trying pickleball for the first time. The tournament provided an opportunity for students to engage in friendly competition, stay active, and experience a new sport in a welcoming environment.
