Victoria Invests in Pickleball Growth: Victoria is set to become a major destination for pickleball as 11 new courts are being added to Topaz Park this summer. The courts are part of the second phase of park improvements, which also include a new outdoor fitness area, a central gathering space, a misting station, and upgraded pathways. The project aims to accommodate the rising demand for pickleball facilities in the city.
A Growing Pickleball Hub
Pickleball has seen a surge in popularity in Victoria, with the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association experiencing a 300% increase in membership since October 2021. Membership numbers grew from 680 in July 2023 to nearly 900 by early 2024.
“We are tremendously excited at the news of the groundbreaking,” said Roger Graves, president of the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association. “This will be a fantastic facility, and we can’t wait to get on the courts.”
City’s Commitment to Recreation
The addition of new pickleball courts aligns with Victoria’s strategic plan to enhance recreational sports amenities. Mayor Marianne Alto highlighted the importance of the project, stating:
“I’m pleased to see the next phase of Topaz Park improvements take shape. These features invite more residents of all ages to explore and enjoy this new active play space in Topaz Park.”
Construction Timeline & Impact
The courts are expected to be completed by fall 2025. During construction, a portion of the Glasgow Street parking lot will be closed, and traffic may be affected on nearby streets. However, the skate park, playground, and sports fields will remain open throughout the construction period.
