Anderson Park’s Pickleball Courts Near Completion, Set for Summer Opening

Anderson Park’s Pickleball Courts: Pickleball’s rapid rise in College Station, Texas, is fueling new developments at Anderson Park, where four dedicated pickleball courts and two multi-use courts are nearing completion. The City of College Station and the Brazos Valley Pickleball Association (BVPA) have collaborated to meet the sport’s growing demand.

New Courts to Support Pickleball Growth

The city broke ground on the project in November 2023, aiming to expand recreational opportunities for the community. The four new pickleball courts and two multi-use courts will accommodate sports like futsal, roller hockey, and bike polo.

BVPA President Joe Hegwood emphasized the necessity of the expansion, citing a surge in pickleball participation.

“We probably had 50 members for a long time there and then the last couple of years went to 200 and almost 400 now. That’s just our association. We probably got three times that people that play that aren’t in the association.” – (Hegwood)

Collaboration on Court Design

To ensure the courts meet player needs, the City of College Station worked closely with BVPA on the layout and design.

“The city staff has gotten with our association, and we looked at the plans and kind of collaborated, and we’re very happy that they invited us to give our input on it.” – (Hegwood)

The multi-use courts were designed to accommodate different sports, with modifications made to enhance accessibility and versatility.

City Officials Excited for Park Activation

City of College Station Project Manager Melissa Thomas expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that Anderson Park has been underutilized in recent years.

“I think we’re excited just to activate this park again. It’s been a little slower, not had as much activity here for a little bit.” – (Thomas)

When Will the Courts Be Ready?

The pickleball courts are about 90% complete, but additional finishing touches remain. Construction is expected to wrap up soon, with the courts set to be available for play by early summer.
