Pickleball Expands in Schools: Students at Dresden Elementary School are getting a hands-on introduction to pickleball, thanks to a new four-week instructional unit in their physical education curriculum. The initiative, led by physical education teacher Kadeem Edge and certified pickleball instructor Elizabeth Sylvester, aims to teach students the fundamentals of the sport and encourage lifelong physical activity.
Gym Transformed for Pickleball Instruction
To prepare for the program, five volunteers from the Dresden Recreation Committee helped mark and measure two pickleball courts inside the school’s gym. The lessons focus on basic ball control and paddle handling, providing students with the skills needed to enjoy the game.
Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., is known for being accessible to players of all ages. By introducing it at the elementary level, the school hopes to spark interest in an activity that students can continue to play for years to come.
Expanding Play Beyond the Classroom
Students will have the chance to further hone their skills beyond school at the Bridge Academy Library’s outdoor pickleball court this summer.
The Bridge Academy, which supports Dresden children through academic scholarships, also provides free access to its pickleball facilities for youth and adults in the community.
A Community Effort to Grow the Sport
The program is part of a larger effort to introduce pickleball to younger players and promote community engagement through sports.
By integrating it into the school curriculum, Dresden Elementary hopes to encourage students to stay active and participate in recreational activities outside of school.
