New Pickleball Courts Coming to South Point, Seeks Additional 15K Dollars for Construction

Pickleball Courts Coming to South Point: Ohio, is set to get new pickleball courts as part of a project funded by remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars. The village is using around $40,000 of these funds to build two courts next to the playground in the local park, with hopes of completing them by midsummer.

Local Players Pushed for Pickleball Expansion

Sarah Coleman and her sister, Haley Rollins, both South Point residents, were the driving force behind the project. Passionate about pickleball, they often traveled to Ashland and Ironton to play but wished for courts closer to home.

They researched the process, prepared a proposal, and presented it to the village council and mayor. Their efforts paid off when they discovered unused COVID relief funds set to expire at the end of 2024.

Funding and Construction Progress

The base concrete layer for the courts has already been poured, with the next steps including adding the sport court foundation, painting lines, installing heavy-duty nets, and putting up fencing.

So far, approximately $40,000 from the American Rescue Plan has been used, but an additional $15,000 is still needed to complete the project. The village hopes to secure the remaining funds by the end of spring. Many in South Point believed the village needed pickleball courts, but someone had to take the initiative.

What’s Next?

The goal is to have the courts ready for play by midsummer. Residents have already responded positively, and excitement is growing. However, the village still needs to secure the final $15,000 for nets and fencing. Efforts to raise the remaining funds will continue throughout the spring.
