Dunn Stadium Pickleball Complex Moves Forward After Drainage Delays

Dunn Stadium Pickleball Complex: A 12-court tournament-quality pickleball complex at Dunn Stadium, near the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds, is moving forward after a revised construction contract was approved by county commissioners on Monday. The project, initially expected to be completed last fall, faced delays due to drainage concerns and required adjustments to the original construction plans.

Drainage Issues Cause Delays and Cost Increases

The project, which is the only pickleball complex on the west side of Columbus, was delayed as city and county officials worked with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to finalize a drainage agreement. Charlie Day, an engineer with DLZ Engineering, explained that overlapping jurisdictions contributed to the holdup.

As a result, the construction plans, originally approved over a year ago, had to be modified to improve water runoff quality at the site. These changes led to a $23,000 increase in project costs, requiring additions, deletions, and modifications to the existing contract with Case Construction.

Construction Expected to Begin This Week

Despite the delays, Case Construction remains eager to begin work, according to Day, who stated that construction could begin as soon as this week following the county’s approval.

Last year, the county helped reduce overall costs by utilizing county workers for some of the initial site preparation.

A Major Addition to Columbus’ Pickleball Scene

The new facility is expected to provide a high-quality venue for local players and tournaments, further supporting the rapid surge of pickleball in Bartholomew County. Once completed, the Dunn Stadium complex will offer additional playing opportunities for the expanding pickleball community in Columbus.
