Pickleball and Fitness Programs Thrive at Urbana Health and Wellness Center

Pickleball and Fitness Programs: The Urbana Health and Wellness Center has become a popular destination for pickleball players since opening on January 6 in Urbana, Illinois. With daily open gym sessions, the facility offers a welcoming space for players of all skill levels to stay active and connect with others.

Pickleball Brings the Community Together

The Urbana Park District developed the facility to promote health, fitness, and social engagement. The gymnasium hosts daily pickleball games, drawing experienced players and newcomers. Many enjoy the easy access to courts and the chance to play without long wait times.

“I like that it’s brand new and it’s clean. The people are great,” said Amy Schuele, a St. Joseph resident.

A Space for All Ages and Interests

The center is open seven days a week and offers a range of amenities, including a walking track, cardio and weight room, group fitness room, and a multi-use community space. Members can also participate in fitness classes like Zumba, Pilates, and cardio drumming.

Poshek Fu, a retired University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign professor, picked up pickleball at the center and enjoys the supportive atmosphere.

“My favorite thing here before playing is to warm up by walking and then cool down by walking again. [The walking track] here is a big plus.” – (Poshek Fu)

Affordable Access Through Community Support

Memberships and daily passes are required to use the facility. However, thanks to a $150,000 partnership between OSF Healthcare Heart of Mary Medical Center and the Urbana Park District, financial assistance is available.

The program provides $30,000 in scholarships per year for five years, helping those who might struggle to afford a membership. So far, the center has gained over 1,000 members, with 120 scholarships awarded.

Community Feedback Shapes Future Growth

The center’s programs and equipment were determined through public feedback sessions before its opening. Jameel Jones, the outreach and wellness manager, emphasized the importance of listening to community needs.

“The most rewarding thing for me is to see that people — they want to be here. They love coming here. They are very friendly. They converse with the staff. They let us know what they’d like to see and we try to make that come to fruition for them.” – (Jameel Jones)
