New Pickleball Courts Coming to Tiverton as Part of Iceplex Sports Complex

Pickleball Courts Coming to Tiverton: Tiverton, Rhode Island, is set to welcome new pickleball courts as part of the planned Iceplex sports complex, a project by Longplex Family and Sports Center owner Jim Long. The facility, located in Tiverton’s Industrial Park, will feature pickleball, ice hockey rinks, and golf-related attractions, expanding recreational opportunities for local athletes and residents.

Pickleball Courts Included in Multi-Sport Expansion

The Iceplex will provide dedicated indoor pickleball courts, giving local players a climate-controlled space for year-round play. The new courts will allow for:

  • Casual and competitive play.
  • Pickleball tournaments and leagues.
  • Community events and training programs.

The addition of pickleball courts aligns with the sport’s rapid growth nationwide, making it more accessible to players of all skill levels.

“The Iceplex and indoor car storage facilities will be constructed first, and initial planning applications are being submitted for all three projects within the coming days,” said Dan Reilly, Long’s attorney and representative.

“The purchases will close upon receiving master plan approval for each project, and all of the property will move onto the tax rolls.” – (Reilly)

Economic and Community Benefits

The new pickleball courts and sports facilities are expected to generate $1.3 million per year in tax revenue, according to Town Council President John G. Edwards.

“We are in dire need to expand the commercial [tax revenue],” Edwards said, noting that 90% of Tiverton’s tax base comes from residential properties, which he believes is not sustainable.

The pickleball courts and Iceplex will be built next to Longplex Family and Sports Center, utilizing existing infrastructure like roads and lighting to minimize additional costs.

Overcoming Previous Expansion Challenges

Previous efforts by Jim Long to expand sports facilities in Tiverton faced resistance from former town officials. However, with new council members now backing the project, the Iceplex and pickleball courts are moving forward.

“Jim [Long] is a great tenant and pays a tremendous amount of taxes,” Edwards said, supporting the need for commercial growth and expanded recreational opportunities.

The planning applications for the pickleball courts and Iceplex will be submitted in the coming days. Once master plan approval is secured, the land purchase will be finalized, and construction will begin.
