New Pickleball Courts Coming to Imperial Beach, Backed by Community Support

Pickleball Courts Coming to Imperial Beach: Imperial Beach is moving forward with plans to build new pickleball courts, selecting Sports Park as the preferred location. During a March 5 meeting, the City Council agreed on the site, citing its parking availability and proximity to restrooms. The project aims to meet growing community interest in the sport.

Site Selection and Considerations

City officials considered two locations for the courts: Sports Park and Veteran’s Park. Sports Park, located south of the picnic area, was chosen due to its accessibility and existing recreational facilities. The upcoming completion of the Sports Park Recreation Center in the summer further supports the decision.

Veteran’s Park, east of the library, was also reviewed but presented challenges, including street proximity, parking constraints, and the need to remove three mature trees. The estimated cost for the project exceeds $750,000. City Manager Tyler Foltz noted that grants may help fund the courts.

Community Support and Council Discussion

Public comments showed strong support for pickleball courts at Sports Park. A resident highlighted the existing 142-member Imperial Beach pickleball Facebook group and suggested tournaments could generate revenue. Others emphasized the park’s picnic tables as an opportunity for families to enjoy the space together.

Speaker Sandi Crosby encouraged the city to consider both locations, stating, “Let’s think big, maybe both places could be an option,” She also shared how pickleball fosters connections and benefits local businesses. “This will build community as a whole on many levels,” she said.

Council members expressed excitement about the project. Councilmember Matthew Leyba-Gonzalez supported Sports Park, while Councilmember Mitch McKay called it the “better fit overall.” Pro Tem Mayor Carol Seabury inquired about additional courts for tournaments, learning that Sports Park could accommodate four courts with some modifications.

Funding and Future Planning

Council discussed court reservations, citing Coronado Cays as a model. The city may use a third-party service such as Impact Activities for scheduling, with possible fees of $6 per court. Mayor Paloma Aguirre emphasized outreach to nearby residents to address potential noise concerns, stating,

“So they truly understand the potential impact of noise. Make sure we’re fully aware and mindful of the cost …the merit of the sport itself cannot bet be overstated.” – (Paloma Aguirre)

With growing interest in pickleball, city officials are working to secure funding and finalize construction plans. Once built, the courts are expected to enhance recreation in Imperial Beach and strengthen community engagement.
