Pickleball Fundraiser Event at Bethany Beach Begins Aug 24

Pickleball Fundraiser Event at Bethany Beach: Bethany Beach conference of the St. Vincent DePaul Society (SVDP) is set to serve up a unique fundraising event this August. On the 24th, the freshly refurbished courts at John M. Clayton Elementary School in Frankford will play host to a pickleball fundraiser, complete with lessons for beginners.

From Cornhole to Pickleball: A Shift in Strategy

Supporters of SVDP might recall their “Cornhole for a Cause” events, traditionally held in the church’s parking lot and playground. This year, the organization has pivoted to pickleball, bringing in nationally certified instructor Bruce Golmic to teach the community.

“The lessons start on Aug. 24, offering the public the chance to ‘learn the game in a safe, no-judgment environment,’” noted Rose Madden, a dedicated church volunteer.

What to Expect

Two beginner sessions are scheduled: from 2-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-5 p.m. at John M. Clayton Elementary School Pickleball Courts, located at 252 Clayton Avenue, Frankford. The setup will feature two on-court volunteer coaches for every four players, ensuring ample support and guidance.

“There will be two on-court pickleball volunteer coaches for every four players on the court. You will get lots of friendly support and assistance,” mentioned Madden.

This event aims to benefit the food pantry sponsored by St. Vincent DePaul, located at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission Church on Roxana Road near Frankford. The pantry, which services hundreds of families weekly, also provides fresh produce from its own garden.

Fundraising with a Twist

Participants are asked to donate $25 for the 1.5-hour session. The event will also include raffles for pickleball items and gift cards, plus a 50/50 drawing at the end of each session. An ice cream truck from Blue Scoop near Selbyville will be on site for refreshments.

“Fun pickleball games for everyone, including spectators, are just $1 per ball to play,” said SVDP representatives.

Registration and Growing Popularity

Space for the clinic is limited, and early registration by Aug. 1 comes with a bonus of five free 50/50 tickets. To register, email your name, phone number, and choice of session to golmicmc@gmail.com.

The pickleball craze is no small matter. In 2023, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association named pickleball the fastest-growing sport in America for the third consecutive year, with an estimated 36.5 million people playing at least once during the year.
