Pickleball enthusiasts in Northampton County will soon have a new facility to enjoy. Horizons Sports Pickleball, a 50,000-square-foot complex, is set to open in early April at 61 W. Second St. in Wind Gap. The facility will offer open play, leagues, lessons, and more, owner Dominic Sumpolec said Monday.
“We’re hoping to be open in the first week or week and a half of April.” – (Sumpolec)
Sumpolec, who owns Horizon Sports Group, a company that builds indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, said this is the first of multiple planned locations. He hopes to expand with additional sites in Scranton and other nearby areas.
I actually own a business that builds pickleball and tennis courts. We build a lot of courts for franchisees of other companies, but this is our first one.” – (Sumpolec)
Features and Membership Options
The Wind Gap facility will feature 13 pickleball courts and offer various membership options. These will include plans for seniors, juniors, and families, along with walk-in rates.
“We’re going to be a little different than other facilities out there.” – (Sumpolec)
“A lot of facilities only serve members, but we’re also going to be open to the general public. So, there will be very affordable, annual memberships that you’d pay monthly as well as walk-in rates where you could reserve a court by the hour. We want to be open to everyone.” – (Sumpolec)
Community Excitement and Demand
Sumpolec, a New Tripoli resident, said the surging demand for pickleball in the Lehigh Valley influenced his decision to open the facility. He has already heard from excited residents in the Slate Belt area.
“I just got a call from a guy in Bangor who saw our billboard. So, there’s a lot of excitement in the area, which is very exciting.” – (Sumpolec)
The Wind Gap location will open ahead of another pickleball facility planned for the Lehigh Valley, which was announced last month.
