Tallahassee’s Pickleball Powerhouse: “The Squad” Plays for Fun and Friendship

Tallahassee’s Pickleball Powerhouse: Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, a lively group of women gathers at the Winthrop Park pickleball courts in Tallahassee. Known as “The Squad,” these 14 women share a love for competition, camaraderie, and laughter. Their bond has strengthened over the years, providing fun and support during difficult times.

A Game and a Support System

The group started as a few friends learning a new sport. Now, it has grown into a tight-knit community with branded apparel and regular tournaments. More than just a team, The Squad serves as a support system for its members. “We’re funny,” Susanne Fortune said, summing up the group’s dynamic.

Susan Chase, the informal leader, echoed the sentiment. “We get along very well with each other.” While all members bring unique personalities to the court, some are more vocal than others. “For instance, I’m a screamer,” Vi Plymel admitted.

Early Mornings and Competitive Spirit

For many, pickleball has become an essential part of their routine.

“I never liked to get up early, But I get up early to play pickleball.” – (Plymel)

Cynthia Wright, known for her competitive nature, doesn’t hold back when playing. “I like to beat the **** out of people,” she told WCTV.

“I used to let other people win. Those days are gone. I’m retired. Now I’m going to win.” – (Cynthia Wright)

A Bond That Extends Beyond the Court

The Squad’s connection goes deeper than just the game. Several members have leaned on the group during personal hardships, including the loss of loved ones.

“It was tough being married for so long and then losing your spouse. I also have a son that is 39 years old that needed a liver transplant – he actually had a liver transplant in November. And these girls are what kept me ticking.” – (Plymel)

Inspired by a Super Bowl Ad

Always looking for ways to have fun, The Squad took inspiration from a recent WeatherTech Super Bowl commercial featuring an energetic group of seniors on a joy ride that ends in a playful arrest. The ad reminded Chase of her own squad, particularly Plymel.

“The ladies look so happy and get along so well, the real tall lady in the pink shirt reminded me of Vi.” – (Chase)

Eager to recreate the scene, the group borrowed a classic convertible, grabbed their paddles, and staged their own playful photoshoot.

“Life is fun,” Chase said.

“We’re cute!” Fortune added.

“Even older people can have fun. And we have a blast!” – (Plymel)
