Johns Creek Pickleball Tournament: The Rotary Club of Johns Creek held its first annual Paddle for a Purpose pickleball tournament on March 22 at the Thornhill Pickleball Courts. The charity event, which lasted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., raised more than its $30,000 goal. Proceeds will support programs fighting child human trafficking, scholarships for underserved youth, and local community initiatives.
A Successful Fundraising Effort
Organizers were thrilled with the tournament’s success, which exceeded expectations. “We’ve exceeded our goal to raise $30,000, we’ve raised more than that,” said Bob MacDonald, Rotary Johns Creek North Fulton’s past president. “This is going to become an annual event for the Rotary Club…the whole idea is to bring in people to have some fun and get some exercise.”
The event received strong support from sponsors, with The Estate Law Center as the title sponsor and Emory Healthcare as the presenting sponsor. Attendees enjoyed a full day of pickleball while contributing to important causes.
Community Engagement and Growth of Pickleball
The tournament featured a live DJ and a free clinic led by local pickleball players to introduce beginners to the game. Scouting America Troop 27 provided food and drinks, creating a welcoming atmosphere for all participants.
“Pickleball is fun, unique and cool,” said Mark Rubin, chairman for the Board of Directors for Thornhill’s recreational property. “We wanted to do something to give back as a neighborhood…it’s social and friendly. We had brackets for novices and beginners to get some newbies out there playing some pickleball trying to advance the sport.”
With its strong turnout and fundraising success, Paddle for a Purpose is expected to become an annual event, further promoting the sport and strengthening community involvement.
