Sewickley Approves Pickleball Courts: Sewickley’s Chadwick Street Park will soon feature four new pickleball courts as part of a $324,000 renovation project set to begin in late spring and finish by year’s end. The project also includes a new tennis court, basketball court improvements, fencing, and landscaping upgrades.
Council Approves Funding and Contractor
The Sewickley Borough Council unanimously voted on March 11 to award the project to Palombo Landscaping, the lowest of 11 bidders. Borough engineer Mike Galet recommended the company for the job.
Funding comes from a $126,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant, with the remaining $198,000 covered by borough funds.
Responding to Community Demand
Councilwoman Bridgett Bates, a parks and recreation committee member, emphasized the need for upgrades and the growing demand for pickleball courts.
“The courts, at a minimum, needed serious attention,”.
“In light of lots of people talking to us about pickleball, many, many, many, many people reaching out to us about pickleball courts. We decided if we were going to take action on that space that we could incorporate that.”-(Bridgett Bates)
The new pickleball courts will also be designed to convert into a full-size tennis court if needed.
Broader Park Improvement Plans
Chadwick Street Park is one of several parks undergoing upgrades. In February, the council applied for a state grant of over $290,000 to fund pedestrian improvements at War Memorial Park.
If approved, the borough may need to contribute 25% to 50% of the project cost. Planned upgrades include resurfacing the walking trail, improving accessibility per ADA standards, and replacing aging wooden bridges with steel ones.
“We did an evaluation of all the parks and we made some priority lists, and we’re working through those,” -(Bridgett Bates)
What’s Next?
With work set to begin soon, local players can expect new courts before the year’s end. Additional park improvements will continue as funding allows, bringing more recreational opportunities to the community.
