Why Pickleball is Booming

Pickleball participation in the U.S. has surged in recent years. Data from Pickleheads.com shows that the number of players has risen from 4.8 million in 2021 to 19.8 million today. The sport has been the fastest-growing in the country for four consecutive years.

The average player is 34.8 years old, with the largest group being 25- to 34-year-olds. The second-largest group consists of players aged 65 and older. Nearly 60% of players are men.

The sport’s accessibility is a key factor in its growth. Pickleball is easy to learn and appeals to all ages, making it an attractive option for beginners and experienced athletes alike.

Pickleball vs. Tennis: Ease of Play

Unlike tennis, which requires scheduling games with a partner or team, pickleball often features open play or drop-in sessions. This format allows players to arrive at a facility and quickly find a game, making it more accessible than traditional racket sports.

The social nature of the sport has also contributed to its popularity, as players can easily rotate in and out of games with new partners and opponents.
