Key Biscayne’s ASK Pickleball Program: The Active Seniors on the Key (ASK) pickleball program continues to grow on Key Biscayne, offering a welcoming space for players of all ages. Led by Susan Sawyer, the program provides opportunities for players to drop in, rotate into games, and build community through the sport.
A Growing Pickleball Community
The ASK pickleball program was founded in 2014 by Ed Stone and Mariana McCroskey at the Community Center. Sawyer later took on a coordinating role, helping the program expand. Initially, only a handful of players participated, but today, with six courts available, up to 24 people can play at once. Sessions are held every weekday and Sunday for members aged 50 and older. Loaner paddles are available for those without equipment.
In 2017, the program extended to Calusa Park, designating four courts for pickleball every day from 9 a.m. to noon. Unlike the Community Center, the Calusa Park courts are open to all ages, further broadening the program’s reach.
Building Friendships on and off the Court
Many players have found a strong sense of community through ASK pickleball. Holly AndersonTiffany, who began playing in 2019, joined the island’s snowbird contingent.
“I’ve met so many people through pickleball,”. “Off the court, we often get together for social events, like potluck gatherings or movie nights.”(Holly AndersonTiffany)
The program also welcomes players of all abilities. Retired dentist Burt Wolf, 91, plays five days a week. If outdoor conditions are unfavorable, he moves to the Community Center’s indoor courts.
“The camaraderie among players is wonderful, on and off the court,”. “Everyone is extremely pleasant, and we have very little conflict.” His advice for newcomers? “Just go out and enjoy yourself and have a good time.”(Burt Wolf)
Sawyer praised Wolf’s dedication.
“Burt is a wonderful gentleman and a great pickleball player,”. “He brings a positive attitude and always wears a smile. He sometimes exclaims ‘fiddlesticks’ when he misses a shot.”( Susan Sawyer)
Pickleball’s Popularity Keeps Growing
Pickleball has become a nationwide sensation, and Key Biscayne’s players are part of the trend. Sawyer pointed out that paddles are compact, making it easy for enthusiasts to bring their gear while traveling.
According to USA Pickleball, the sport’s governing body, paddles must not exceed 17 inches in length and a combined length and width of 24 inches. Beginner paddles cost around $40, while advanced ones can sell for $175.
Though some players compete fiercely, many enjoy a relaxed approach. The sport’s casual nature is reflected in its dress code. Unlike traditional tennis whites, pickleball players often wear colorful attire—and sometimes, playful costumes. Last Halloween, a group of women played in inflatable animal suits at Calusa Park, embracing the sport’s fun-loving spirit.

Participants enjoy both friendly competition and social events. With its growing popularity, the program continues to bring people together for fun, fitness, and camaraderie.
