Nitro’s All-Weather Pickleball Courts: A new addition to the Nitro Pickleball courts is set to boost tourism and accommodate year-round play. The court cover, designed to be enclosed and heated in winter while opening for fresh air in warmer months, is expected to be completed in May, according to Mayor Dave Casebolt.
Unique Design for All-Weather Play
The Nitro Athletic Complex is close to completion, and the pickleball court cover is one of the final elements. Mayor Casebolt explained the structure’s versatility, emphasizing its ability to adapt to different weather conditions.
“When the weather is good and during the summertime we can open all the sides up on it and allow the air to come through and you don’t have to air condition it.” – (Casebolt)
A Growing Sport and Tourism Attraction
Pickleball has rapidly gained popularity across the U.S., and Nitro officials believe the upgraded courts will draw players and tournaments to the area.
“It’s the fastest growing sport in America and it’s attracting a lot of tourism. And so we expect, once this cover is completed, to attract a lot of tournaments to West Virginia and to Nitro.” – (Casebolt)
Final Steps Before Completion
With most of the structure in place, workers are preparing to finish the project.
“Basically the next step in this process is to stretch this cover over and across. Then there is another cover that will go on the inside that is blue.” – (Casebolt)
Excitement for the Community
As construction nears completion, residents of all ages are eager to make use of the courts. Casebolt shared his enthusiasm for the sport’s inclusive nature.
“I see kids out here, preschool kids and I see adults as old as 90 years old out here playing this game, and that’s what’s exciting to me. It gets people out, it gets people into social contact with a lot of other people. It’s just a great game.” – (Casebolt)
Once finished, the covered courts will be open 24/7 year-round, offering a new recreational hub for the Nitro community and beyond.
