Rockford’s Pickleball Club: A group of Rockford residents gathered at the UW Health Sports Factory despite rainy weather to play pickleball and socialize. A Growing Social Community
Pickleball has become more than just a game for those involved. “You make great friends that you would never meet anywhere else,” said Tom Rondone. Club members coordinate through email to schedule games and celebrate birthdays with treats. “It is a social club as well,” said Allen Steely.
Pickleball’s Popularity and Health Benefits
April is National Pickleball Month, and the sport has been the fastest-growing in the U.S. for four consecutive years. Steely noted its appeal to retirees. “Right after I retired at age 66, then I started to play,” he said. “It’s also great exercise for older people to keep your heart [and] your lungs in shape.”
Dean Russell, another player, shared similar sentiments. “You adapt to a certain group of friends, and you become very close,” he said. The sport has also helped him manage his health. “I’ve been diabetic for 38 years. It’s to keep moving so I don’t get complications from diabetes.”
Expanding Nationwide
Pickleball’s rapid growth is evident across the country. USA Pickleball reports that 4,000 new courts were added nationwide in 2024, allowing more people to engage with the sport and its benefits.
