Pickleball players in Salem will soon have improved courts at the Oakey Field Complex. The city recently removed the old courts for renovations, and officials say they will return better than before. Work is underway, with completion expected by mid-summer, depending on weather conditions.
Renovation to Enhance Playing Experience
The six courts at Oakey Field were originally converted from tennis courts when pickleball gained popularity. Over time, they showed wear and tear, leading to the current renovation effort. Heavy machinery was brought in to tear up the old surfaces and prepare for upgrades.
John Shaner, Salem’s Parks and Recreation Director, emphasized the importance of the project. “We’re right next to our Salem Museum, and we want this to be more of a somewhat of a showpiece as people drive into Salem, and also how big people love pickleball in Salem,” he said.
Boosting Salem’s Pickleball Reputation
Shaner explained that the new courts will be similar to those at the Moyer Sports Complex. The city aims to make Salem a prime destination for pickleball players.
“We’re hoping to have them back online within the next two months, sometime mid-summer when we finish them, all weather depending,” Shaner added.
Beyond local players, the courts support the city’s economy by attracting tournaments. These events bring visitors who spend money at shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making pickleball a valuable asset to Salem.
A Growing Sport in Salem
Pickleball has continued to gain traction nationwide, and Salem is no exception. By investing in upgraded courts, the city is reinforcing its commitment to the sport and its players. Once complete, the new courts will provide a fresh and improved experience for local enthusiasts and visiting competitors.
