East Petersburg Borough Council has approved a sound-mitigation measure for the town’s pickleball courts and adjusted their operating hours following noise complaints from residents. At the April 1 meeting, the council awarded a contract to Fence Screen for $6,567 to install a sound-reducing fence and voted to shorten the courts’ closing time by one hour.
New Noise Reduction Plan
Residents near the pickleball courts, which opened last spring, have raised concerns about excessive noise from the ball striking paddles. In response, project supervisor Jeff Moseman researched various sound-mitigation products, with costs ranging from $1,100 to $16,500 for 120 feet of material. Council ultimately selected Fence Screen as the provider.
Court Hours Adjusted
Alongside the sound-mitigation plan, council members voted 3-2 to reduce pickleball court hours from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. to 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Council members John Herr and Randy Rannels opposed the decision, advocating for an even earlier closing time. “I’d like to see it close at 8,” Herr stated.
Additional Council Actions
Council also approved a $4,573 contribution to the Lancaster County Drug Task Force for 2025. The funding is based on a per capita rate set by the Lancaster County Office of the District Attorney.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for April 24 at 6 p.m., with the next full council meeting set for May 6 at 7 p.m.
