Emporia’s Pickleball Boom: Why Hammond Park’s New Courts Have Everyone Talking

Emporia’s Pickleball Boom: The City of Emporia and the Emporia Pickleball Club are teaming up to add more pickleball courts to Hammond Park, expanding opportunities for players across the community.

Expanding Access to a Growing Sport

Residents of Emporia, Kansas, will soon see new pickleball courts at Hammond Park, thanks to a partnership between the Emporia Pickleball Club and the City of Emporia.

The plan involves adding pickleball lines to the existing tennis courts, increasing the total number of courts at the park, and bringing Emporia’s total count to 10 courts, in addition to the six at Reeble Park.

Helping With Court Availability

Carmen Leeds, president of the Emporia Pickleball Club, said the new courts will ease congestion during busy times. The addition of the new courts will help out if courts are not available at Reeble Park during peak hours of the day.

With pickleball’s popularity continuing to rise, court availability has become an issue during high-traffic hours, especially at Reeble Park. The expansion at Hammond Park will help meet the growing demand.

Supporting the Community and Promoting the Sport

The Emporia Pickleball Club is not just focused on court expansion — it’s also committed to growing the game. The club has been active in introducing pickleball to a wide range of age groups.

Leeds shared that the club has taught pickleball at Emporia State University, elementary schools, and the Boys and Girls Club’s after-school program. The club has also donated paddles to the Boys and Girls Club to ensure more kids have a chance to play.

The club still wants to grow the game in the community, regardless of age or skill level, and to socialize and enjoy the game.

A Game for Everyone

Pickleball is a fast-growing sport played with a paddle and a plastic ball over a 34-inch-high net. It can be played indoors or outdoors, either as singles or doubles. The sport has become a popular way for people of all ages to stay active, make new friends, and have fun.

With the addition of new courts at Hammond Park, the Emporia Pickleball Club hopes to see even more residents picking up a paddle and joining the game.

News in Brief: Emporia’s Pickleball Boom

Emporia is adding new pickleball courts at Hammond Park by converting existing tennis courts. The project, led by the Emporia Pickleball Club and the City of Emporia, will boost total courts in town to 16. The club also teaches and donates gear to local schools and youth programs.
