Gainesville Breaks Ground on Pickleball Paradise at Tom Petty Park!

Pickleball Paradise at Tom Petty Park: City officials in Gainesville, Florida, held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday to kick off major improvements at Tom Petty Park, including the addition of eight new pickleball courts and other upgrades aimed at boosting community engagement and outdoor recreation.

Tom Petty Park Renovations Begin

On Friday morning, April 4, Gainesville city leaders gathered to mark the start of a renovation project at Tom Petty Park, led by the city’s Wild Spaces and Public Places Department and the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department.

The project will add eight dedicated pickleball courts, along with new seating areas, improved lighting, and better access for pedestrians and people with disabilities.

The upgrades are designed to make the park more welcoming for residents and visitors and to create new opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors and connect with others.

Enhancing Community Connections

“So parks are a really great opportunity to get to know your neighbors this is a regional park so we anticipate people coming in from all over the city so you can get a lot of mingling with community members from district within the city and probably even outside of city limits coming to socialize to socialize, interact, to be outside in nature.” said Betsy Waite, director of Wild Spaces and Public Places.

The project is expected to bring people together, not just for sports like pickleball but also to enjoy nature, relax, and build a stronger sense of community.

Accessibility and Environmental Improvements

As part of the renovations, the multi-purpose trail will be rerouted to improve ADA accessibility, ensuring more people can enjoy the park. The project will also include upgrades to stormwater management systems and refreshed landscaping to enhance the park’s natural beauty.

A new pedestrian entrance will also be added from the Northeast 16th Avenue crosswalk, helping make the park easier to reach on foot.

What’s Next

Construction is expected to continue through the next year, with the full project set for completion by early 2026. Once finished, Tom Petty Park will offer more amenities and accessible features, becoming an even more inviting destination for outdoor fun and fitness.
