Pickleball Courts Opening October: Some pickleball courts at the Wheat City Tennis and Pickleball Hub in Brandon are expected to open this October, even as the full facility remains under construction. Developer Joel Schultz says players will still be able to access the east and west side courts while the center is completed.
Courts Ready Before Full Completion
Joel Schultz, owner of Concept Homes, said the courts on both sides of the building have separate doors. These will allow limited play while construction continues.
“On both the east and the west side, there’s four courts, and they have their own direct doors to the outside,”. “So if nothing else, we will for sure have the west and east sections done and figure out a way to make those outside doors work to get people in and playing.”(Joel Schultz)
The main part of the building will take longer due to added features. These include lounges, a gym, and wellness areas like hot tubs and a sauna.
Inside Plans for the Pickleball Hub
The main section of the hub will feature 24-foot-high walls. It will include a lounge, pro shop, changing rooms, and access to courts. There will also be an upstairs gym and another lounge with a view of the main courts.
The complete facility will hold 14 pickleball courts, with some able to convert into four tennis courts.
Carpenter Patrick Belhumeur was working outside the building on Friday. He said he was installing a large window facing Pacific Avenue.
Expected Growth and Nearby Interest
The site is expected to attract 12,000 visitors in its first year. Brandon officials see the project as a key part of downtown growth and development.
Ryan Nickel, the city’s planning and buildings director, confirmed they are in talks about a possible housing project across the street.
“The hope is to see that property developed for residential uses,”. “We’ll be able to share more information as that process moves forward.”(Ryan Nickel)
No formal plans have been submitted yet, but concept ideas have been shared.
Next Steps for the Project
Construction work is about to speed up. Schultz said concrete pouring for the exterior walls begins next week.
“Starting next week, it will be full steam ahead,” (Joel Schultz).
Once the walls are done, roofing work will follow.
