Austin’s Pickleball Dream: The Austin City Council met with the Austin Minnesota Area Pickleball Association (AMAPA) on Monday to discuss a plan to build eight pickleball courts at Rotary Centennial Park by 2026. The estimated $380,000 project would be jointly funded by AMAPA, the City of Austin, and The Hormel Foundation.
Council Reviews Pickleball Court Proposal
During the work session, AMAPA presented a general plan for the new courts. The goal is to complete the project in 2026. The group hopes to share costs with the city and The Hormel Foundation, as well as raise funds on their own.
“We do know that money is an issue, probably the biggest issue. We do think the benefits of pickleball are worth the city contributing.” – (AMAPA Board Member Bob Rosel)
The council showed interest in the plan but made no final decisions during the session.
Funding Challenges and City Considerations
Council members discussed concerns about funding the courts. They noted the need to balance this request with other local sports projects, such as a proposed caneball court. “I want the council to consider all of our recreation needs,” First Ward Council Member Laura Helle said to Rosel and supporters in attendance.
“I think it’s reasonable for the city to be a player, the foundation to be a player and do your own fundraiser.” – (Laura Helle)
Second Ward Council Member Mike Postma warned that adding the courts could impact the city’s 2026 tax levy and budget, which planning will begin for in June.
City Administrative Services Director Tom Dankert said that funds could come from either capital funds tied to the tax levy or the city’s building fund.
Fundraising a Key Factor
Council members also questioned whether AMAPA would be able to meet their fundraising goals. A similar project attempt failed a few years ago due to a lack of funding.
“I think having some sort of split makes sense.” – (Postma)
Despite concerns, Rosel promised the group would continue working to raise money for the project.
“What we’re here to find out is what is possible. We’re confident that pickleball courts will have a positive impact on Austin.” – (Rosel)
“We’re hopeful this is the start of the process.” – (Rosel)
What Comes Next
The meeting marked the beginning of a possible plan to add more recreational options in Austin. While the idea was met with support, funding questions remain. The city and AMAPA are expected to continue talks as they work toward a shared solution.
