Pickleball is Transforming Aiken’s Youth: Southern Pickleball Academy is helping Aiken youth through pickleball by donating gear and hosting events to support mental health and character development. The nonprofit has provided over $20,000 in equipment to Aiken County schools and is holding clinics and tournaments for students throughout April and May.
Supporting Students Through Sport
The Southern Pickleball Academy (SPA), based in Aiken, is using the fast-growing sport to reach students. The group has donated paddles, nets, and other gear to middle and high schools across Aiken County. SPA hopes this support helps kids learn skills like respect, perseverance, and teamwork.
Cindy Ogden, the board secretary at SPA, shared why the sport makes a difference.
“You’re building those connections, and connections can have lifelong impacts. The same CDC survey said 68% of teens that have connections, you know, with their families, with their churches, with organizations such as Southern Pickleball Academy, have much better results long term. So once they get into college, they’re less likely to be promiscuous and do drugs and and do things like that because they have a core.”
Clinics and Competitions for All Ages
The Academy will host a beginner pickleball clinic on Saturday, April 26, for anyone wanting to learn how to play. They also offer a monthly “First Friday pickleball and pizza” event. Their biggest event, the Battle of the Paddles pickleball scramble, is scheduled for May 17 at Gregg Park Community Center.
The tournament is open to kids ages 8 to 18. It will feature three age brackets, and the gold medal games will be officiated like professional matches. Ogden says there are not many tournaments for young players, which makes this event a special opportunity for local youth.
Why This Matters
Southern Pickleball Academy is creating safe spaces for teens to grow both on and off the court. Through clinics, gear donations, and competitive play, the nonprofit aims to build lasting connections and promote good mental health. More events like this may follow as interest in pickleball continues to rise.
