Vandalism Sparks $81K Security Overhaul at Point Mallard Park Courts

Point Mallard Park Courts: Decatur city officials are installing new security cameras at Point Mallard Park after recent vandalism caused more than $40,000 in damage. The city council approved nearly $81,000 for cameras with facial recognition for the park’s pickleball and tennis courts, which are expected to open in less than two weeks.

The decision comes as part of a larger push to protect public property and deter further damage. These courts are not open yet, but the city is moving quickly to ensure they’re safe once they are.

City Invests in Security After Damage

The Decatur City Council approved the $81,000 camera purchase on Monday night. These cameras will cover the new pickleball and tennis courts.

The cost adds to an earlier $91,000 investment in cameras for the Aquatic Center, making the total more than $172,000.

Mayor Tab Bowling said the damage at the courts has already cost the city over $40,000. He hopes the new technology will stop future vandalism.

Mayor Responds to Growing Concerns

WAAY 31 spoke to Mayor Bowling about the issue. He stressed the need for quick action.

“This shouldn’t be a concern if you’re out there doing things you shouldn’t be doing,” said Mayor Bowling.

He said the money for the cameras came from the city’s unassigned fund balance—extra money from the last fiscal year.

Courts Set to Open Soon

Despite the damage, the courts are still on track to open in just 12 days.

Mayor Bowling said the facility will be one of a kind in the area and will help bring more visitors to the city.

“This will bring economic impact. There won’t be a facility like this within 100 miles of Decatur. So it will bring tournaments, and there’s really a lot of cost coming now to try to schedule tournaments.”

The mayor believes strong security is key to protecting this new space.
