BC Deaf Pickleball Open 2025 Promises a Cash-Fueled Showdown Like Never Before

The BC Deaf Pickleball Open Tournament will return for its second year from August 8 to 10, 2025, at Greenaway Courts in Surrey, British Columbia. Hosted by the BC Deaf Pickleball Community, this charity event welcomes ASL users of all kinds to compete across various skill levels, with cash prizes replacing medals this year.

This inclusive tournament features events for skill levels from 3.0 to 4.0+, with separate days for men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles. Registration opens April 10 and closes August 1. Entry fees begin at CAD 40, with a price increase to CAD 50 after July 4.

Three Days of Competition and Community

The pickleball event kicks off Friday evening with Men’s and Women’s Scramble Doubles. Saturday will host Fixed Men’s and Women’s Doubles, while Sunday is reserved for Fixed Mixed Doubles. Courts will also be available for drop-in play and practice on Friday.

The pickleball tournament will use several play formats, including round-robin and single or double elimination, depending on the number of participants. Most players are guaranteed at least four games per event.

Cash Prizes and Skill Rules

Unlike last year, winners will receive cash payouts instead of medals. Gold medalists will earn 40% of the group’s collected fees, with a guaranteed minimum of $40 per player. Silver medalists will receive their entry fee back, and bronze winners will receive a small prize.

Players must register online and pay through eTransfer or credit card. Teams are only confirmed once both partners have registered, paid, and signed the waiver. If a teammate fails to register within two weeks, the team may be moved to the waitlist.

Players will be grouped by skill using their highest available rating from PickleballBrackets, DUPR, or self-ratings. The tournament committee may adjust groupings based on registration.

Inclusive and Charitable Goals

The tournament welcomes all ASL users including Deaf, Hard of Hearing, CODAs, and interpreters. Age is open to players 12 and older.

“This is a charity tournament: all funds raised from our raffle table and 50/50 will be donated to Family Network for Deaf Children/Deaf Youth Today summer programs,” organizers announced.

Although interpreters will not be officially provided, the team is working to bring in student interpreters and volunteers.

Event Details and Venue Information

The event will be held outdoors at Greenaway Courts, located at 17906 60th Ave, Surrey, BC. Players are advised to bring their own chairs, food, and water, although snacks and beverages will be for sale onsite. Free parking is available, but space is limited.

USAPA-approved paddles are required, and the tournament ball will be the FRANKLIN X40. Clothing that matches the color of the ball may need to be changed, per the director’s request.

Matches may be officiated when possible, and all medal games are expected to have referees. Those interested in volunteering can contact the tournament director.

Growing the Sport for the Deaf Community

The BC Deaf Pickleball Open Tournament aims to create a welcoming space for the Deaf and signing community to enjoy sports, compete, and connect. With a new prize system and a refined format, this year’s event hopes to be bigger and better.

As awareness grows and participation increases, events like this help expand accessible sporting opportunities and foster strong community ties. Organizers encourage early registration to avoid missing out.
