Greenville’s Game-Changing Indoor Pickleball Arena Breaks Ground!

Greenville Indoor Pickleball Facility: A new indoor pickleball facility, Baseline GVL, officially broke ground on April 10 at 8 Gladys Drive, just south of Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina. The 40,000-square-foot arena will feature 16 courts, a pro shop, and food and beverage services. The facility is expected to open this fall.

A Vision for Indoor Pickleball in the Upstate

Baseline GVL was founded by Greg Shepherd, Danny Joyner, and Dave Benore. Leading construction is Creative Builders, working with JLM Renderhouse, SHLTR Architects, and United Community.

“Today is not the start of a construction project, it’s the start of a vision becoming a reality, a vision that will shape the future of this community, enhance its growth, and stand as a testament to the hard work and dedication here,” said David Hughes of Creative Builders.

Each of the 16 courts will be 880 square feet, with 7 to 14 feet of spacing between them for safe play. The venue will also include indoor-outdoor seating, retail space, and a food vendor—though the specific vendor has not yet been named.

Filling the Gap for Indoor Play

Chandler Benore, the daughter-in-law of partner Dave Benore, will serve as director of operations. A lifelong fan of racquet sports, she got involved with pickleball in 2020 and quickly noticed the need for indoor courts.

“When I first started playing pickleball, we only had maybe 20 or 30 dedicated pickleball courts in Greenville County. And now we’re proud to say we have 200-plus public dedicated pickleball courts but we still don’t have any indoor facilities.” – (Chandler Benore)

Planning for the project began in 2022 after the Baseline GVL team recognized the community’s growing demand for indoor pickleball.

Retail Partnership and Local Growth

The development will also feature a pro shop operated in partnership with Gary Link, the founder of Upstate Paddles and Pickleball. This addition is meant to serve new and experienced players looking for gear and expert advice in one convenient location.

Looking Ahead: A Boost for Community and Sport

Baseline GVL aims to become a central hub for pickleball in Greenville, especially as interest in the sport continues to grow. With no other indoor facilities in the area, the arena will meet year-round demand for court time, local events, and community gatherings.

The project is expected to open by fall, providing players across the Upstate a much-needed space to play regardless of the weather.
