Sundre Council Backs Pickleball Players with Extended Restroom Access

Sundre Pickleball’s Toilet Extension: The Town of Sundre has approved a request by the Sundre Pickleball Association to keep portable toilets near the local outdoor pickleball courts until the end of September. The decision was made during a recent council meeting to support the growing community of players and enhance accessibility for all.

Pickleball Association Requests Extended Access

Eva Dombowsky and Marie Snippa, members of the non-profit Sundre Pickleball Association, asked the council to extend the use of the portable toilets located near the town’s ball diamonds. These facilities are typically removed by the end of June, but the group requested they remain until September.

“We’re here today to ask if the portable toilets that are over at the ball diamonds could be left there for us to utilize until the end of September,” said Dombowsky.

She noted the courts, once unused and in disrepair, were revitalized by the association and are now open to the public outside of scheduled games.

Health, Growth, and Community Benefits

Dombowsky said the improvements have boosted community wellness and helped promote active lifestyles. The association currently has nearly 80 active winter players, with a 20–25 percent increase expected in summer.

“We’re older, we need bathrooms!” she added, drawing laughs during the meeting.

Cost and Funding Discussion

According to the town’s community development director, Benazir Thaha Valencia, the town covers the cost of two portable toilets from April to June. Minor Ball pays about $669.50 per season for their use. Extending the use to September would cost the town an extra $834.75.

“They pay, per season, about $669.50,” Valencia said. Snippa offered that the association could help cover the cost.

“We are happy to contribute some to that,” said Snippa. “We do not pay for the property, but we are the only people that have enhanced the property and will continue to.”

Council Supports the Community’s Efforts

Several council members voiced support. “I drive by that pickleball court every day, and this association’s done such a wonderful job on maintaining it and making it look good compared to what it used to be,” said Coun. Chris Vardas.

“It fits into what we try to do as one of our pillars for a healthy community and being active,” he added. Coun. Owen Petersen backed the idea but suggested more public restrooms are needed in general.

“Public toilets are my favourite subject,” Petersen said, also drawing laughs. “They play an important part in helping to keep people outside and being active.” Coun. Jaime Marr supported the motion but recommended budgeting for the expense in the future.

Council Decision and Next Steps

The council approved the motion to cover the total cost of keeping the portable toilets in place, including up to $1,530.37 and an additional $85 for delivery and pickup. The funds will come from the community services stabilization restricted surplus account. Coun. Todd Dalke was the only member opposed.

With the approval, the Sundre Pickleball Association will be able to support its players and visiting members with extended restroom access through the peak summer months.
