Pickleball Tournament is Transforming Lives: A community pickleball tournament at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire brought together 24 teams and 50 participants to raise money for children with cancer. Organized by the UW-Eau Claire Pickleball Club and the campus Pinky Swear Pack, the event combined sports and charity to support young patients and their families.
The tournament aimed to help the Pinky Swear Foundation, a Minnesota-based nonprofit that supports children battling cancer. Participants of all ages came out to play and contribute to the cause through team sign-ups and donations.
Combining Sport and Service
Sydney Walworth, president of the Pickleball Club, led the event with a strong personal connection.
“I love pickleball and being able to use it for good, is something that I’m really passionate about. As someone who’s dealt with the impacts of cancer with family members and friends, it is very detrimental.” – (Walworth)
The event welcomed 24 teams totaling around 50 players. Everyone involved shared the same purpose—to help kids fighting cancer.
Pinky Swear Pack’s Mission
The Pinky Swear Pack is UW-Eau Claire’s student group tied to the larger Pinky Swear Foundation. President Audrey Raeker explained how funds were collected.
“Teams that have signed up and donated the entry fees, for the pickleball tournament to go towards the Pinky Swear Foundations mission.” – (Walworth)
The group raises awareness through events on campus and in the Eau Claire community. They also connect directly with young cancer survivors.
“Last year I had the honor. We did a few events with a young girl, a 15-year-old who had been through her cancer journey. We spent time getting to know her and her story. We did little events with her over zoom. We got to know her and her family a bit.” – (Raeker)
A Game With a Bigger Purpose
Walworth said it’s not just about playing; it’s about making a difference.
“Just seeing the little impact we can make, just helping them financially, emotionally, know that we’re there to support them. It’s something that I’m really passionate about. It’s something that I’m really glad that all of my club members were willing to do.” – (Walworth)
Even small acts of help go a long way, she added.
“Even just saying ‘what can I do to help?’ maybe if they can’t do the financial donations, maybe helping set up. Little things like that really goes a long way.” – (Walworth)
Making a Lasting Impact
The tournament gave students and community members a way to help kids in need. For organizers and players, it was more than just a game—it was about keeping a promise to support others.
