Imperial Beach Pickleball Courts: Imperial Beach city leaders are supporting a plan to build new outdoor pickleball courts at Sports Park. The proposed project could cost between $750,000 and $1 million. No funding source has been confirmed, and construction plans are still being developed.
Council Discusses Plans and Costs
The new courts would be located on Imperial Beach Boulevard near the Tijuana River Estuary. City Manager Tyler Foltz said the total cost would range from $750,000 to $1 million. The project could involve removing trees, changing walkways, and installing fencing. Mayor Paloma Aguirre praised the sport’s impact at a City Council meeting.
“The merits of the sport itself cannot be overstated. It’s incredible how this type of sport has brought us the ability to, not just recreate in a safe way for all ages, but also socialize.” – (Paloma Aguirre)
Why Sports Park Was Chosen
City staff reviewed several locations for the courts. Sports Park was chosen based on noise levels, landscaping needs, and restroom access. Veterans Park was also considered.
The Sports & Fitness Industry Association says pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the U.S. Sports Park already has indoor pickleball options inside its recreation center.
Community and Council Input
Several residents supported the plan. Some shared how difficult it is to play at nearby Coronado Cays courts because of long wait times. Imperial Beach resident Katy Turner explained why more courts are needed.
“I’m trying to be more active in my senior years, and this is certainly a sport I can engage in wholeheartedly at this point.” – (Turner)
Mayor Pro Tem Carol Seabury asked if the new courts could host tournaments. City staff said the current plans may not support large events. Mayor Aguirre also asked about adding a reservation system and the costs tied to it.
What’s Next for the Project
City staff will prepare detailed construction plans. These plans will be presented at a future council meeting for final approval. Once approved and funded, work on the courts can begin.
The project could bring more outdoor play space to the community and help support the growth of pickleball in Imperial Beach.
