Jack Johnson Tennis Center Pickleball Conversion: The Jack Johnson Tennis Center in Pittsburg, Kansas, will soon be transformed into a new six-court pickleball facility. The project, funded by ARPA at a cost of $575,000, will begin in mid-May and take eight weeks to complete, according to city officials.
Plans for New Pickleball Courts
The City of Pittsburg’s Parks and Recreation Department announced it will fully demolish the existing two tennis courts at the Jack Johnson Tennis Center. The site currently serves tennis and pickleball players. Once construction begins, it will become a dedicated space for pickleball only, featuring two banks of three pickleball courts each.
New fencing, lighting, netting, and concrete will be added to improve the space. Unlike past resurfacing work, the city aims to build courts that will last longer and better serve the growing pickleball community.
Community Support and Construction Timeline
“Pittsburg has a real strong community tie to pickleball,” said Toby Book, City of Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Director.
“Pickleball with the Johnson family doing so well at the world, at global level, really, there. So, these courts bear their names and they’ve been here, and we hope to get them back. And so, we just we want to do it right.” – (Toby Book)
Construction is expected to begin in mid-May and take eight weeks, depending on weather. During this time, high school tennis courts will remain open for the tennis community to use.
Why the Project Matters
This upgrade marks a key moment in Pittsburg’s support for pickleball, a sport that continues to gain popularity. By investing in high-quality courts, the city shows its commitment to active recreation and community wellness. The project also honors the local Johnson family’s legacy in the sport.
