Owensboro’s Park Makeover: New Pickleball Courts Set to Transform Local Recreation

Pickleball Expansion in Owensboro: Owensboro is adding new pickleball courts to city parks, responding to strong public demand. Parks and Recreation Director Amanda Rogers announced the upgrades during a recent presentation. Work at Moreland Park and possibly Chautauqua Park will start this summer, with completion aimed for fall.

Pickleball Access Growing in Owensboro

City officials shared plans to boost pickleball access by installing courts at Moreland Park. They also may add courts at Chautauqua Park. Rogers said the city recently rebuilt Moreland Park’s playground and will move the basketball court to make room for two pickleball courts.

“We want to design parks using the concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design,” Rogers said. “Relocating the court helps avoid conflict between user groups and gives it more visibility, like we’ve seen successfully at Legion Park.”

Community Feedback Sparks Changes

Rogers explained that the rise in pickleball investments came after public input during the city’s master planning process. A larger pickleball complex is also planned at Ben Hawes Park. Adding courts to neighborhood parks will help younger players and those without easy transportation.

“We want to make it accessible while being mindful of all user groups,” Rogers said, noting the city continues talks with local baseball, tennis, and pickleball groups.

Impact and Next Steps

The new courts will make pickleball more available to the community. Construction bids are expected to go out early this summer. With the work scheduled to finish by fall, residents will soon have more places to play close to home.
