Ocean City Pickleball Players Score Big Win Against 275% Court Fee Hike

Ocean City Pickleball: Pickleball players in Ocean City, New Jersey, successfully pushed back against a proposed 275% increase in court fees after voicing strong opposition to city leaders on April 10, 2024. Following community action, the City Council approved a new, much lower fee structure.

Proposed Increase Sparks Outrage

City officials had planned to raise the price of a season pass from $60 to $225 for both indoor and outdoor courts. Players could also pay $150 for outdoor courts only or $100 for indoor courts only. The proposed increase was part of broader city service rate changes and was up for second reading at the April 10 City Council meeting, after being approved at a first reading two weeks earlier.

Members of the local pickleball community quickly organized. According to the Ocean City Sentinel, they called and met with Mayor Jay Gillian to express their concerns.

Mayor and Council Respond

In response to the outcry, Mayor Gillian suggested new fees of $100 a year for unlimited indoor and outdoor play, $90 for outdoor only, and $25 for indoor only.

At the council meeting, several players attended and were ready to speak during public comment. However, they did not speak after the mayor proposed the new, reduced fees.

The City Council approved the revised fees by a 6-1 vote.

Community Celebrates the Outcome

The change meant players would not face the steep 275% price hike. The move was seen as a victory for the local pickleball community, showing how civic action can lead to results.

The Ocean City Sentinel noted, “And there was much rejoicing in Ocean City, we’re sure.”

The new fees will cover use of the outdoor courts at 18th Street and the indoor courts at the Civic Center from May 1 through October 31.

What Happens Next

With the new fee structure in place, players can continue to enjoy pickleball without major financial strain. The event highlights the importance of community involvement in local government decisions. Future rate changes may now face closer scrutiny from Ocean City residents.
