Heron Pickleball Fundraiser Success: The Gunston School’s Heron Pickleball Tournament raised over $13,000 for the school’s athletics program on Sunday, April 13. Originally set for April 12, the event was rescheduled due to bad weather. Despite cold and windy conditions early on, the weather improved as the day went on, allowing the tournament to proceed.
Successful Event Despite Weather Challenges
The tournament, which took place on the school’s tennis courts, saw 60 players compete in a double-elimination format. The event also featured 10 volunteers, including staff, parents, and students, who helped ensure its success.
“We’re very grateful for the flexibility of the players who attended,” said Events and Alumni Coordinator Delaney Dunnigan.
“We made it work! A special shout out to the members of the Crabby Pickleball Club on Kent Island, who made a strong showing.” – (Dunnigan)
Proceeds Will Benefit Gunston’s Athletic Teams
The funds raised will be used to buy new equipment and uniforms for Gunston’s 21 interscholastic teams. These include a new competitive pickleball team. The event began with a fun tradition: longtime faculty member Ben Dize served his famous homemade fluffy pancakes to kick off the day.
Support for Gunston Athletics
Head of School John Lewis emphasized the importance of athletics in the school’s philosophy.
“Over the last 10 years, our athletic programs have expanded significantly in both size and competitiveness. Looking ahead, we see tremendous potential, and continued financial support for our student-athletes and coaches is essential to maintaining this momentum. We deeply appreciate everyone who sponsored and took part in supporting these efforts.” – (John Lewis)
The tournament was not only a fundraiser but also a demonstration of the Gunston community’s strong support for its student-athletes.
