Indoor Pickleball Courts in Door County: Two open houses are planned in northern Door County to gather public ideas about building a year-round indoor recreation and athletic center. These meetings will happen on Jan. 29 in Baileys Harbor and Feb. 7 in Sister Bay as part of a countywide study.
The first open house was already held in Sturgeon Bay. That event also gathered thoughts about a possible outdoor athletic complex in the city. The next two open houses aim to get even more public feedback for a feasibility study by Ayres Associates.
Plans for New Indoor Center
The study is looking at adding an indoor center to serve the whole county. It would be open year-round and work with other local sports places. Early plans show ideas for pickleball courts, a play area, a multi-use gym, and a turf field house.
The study will also decide the best way to run the center. It could be managed by the city, the county, a private group, or a non-profit. The goal is to make sure it stays affordable for local people.
Support and Contributions
The Sturgeon Bay Common Council gave $20,000 for the $74,500 study. The Sturgeon Bay School District added $17,000. Other supporters include Door County Medical Center, The Raibrook Foundation, Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, and the Door County Pickleball Club.
Kristen Jeanquart, a steering committee member, said this new center would help local people stay active all year. “The proposed new indoor center would be a countywide project intended to complement existing facilities for year-round use locally,” she said.
Next Steps and Future Plans
The study will show how much public support the idea has. City Administrator Josh Van Lieshout said the project’s cost is still unknown. “Those improvements could be done in priority-based phases,” he said.
The open houses and study results will help decide what comes next. Public feedback is important to shape the project.
