University Pickleball Tournament Community Event: Students at the University of Nebraska Omaha gathered on April 16 for a fun pickleball tournament at the H&K building. Five teams battled for a prize of new pickleball gear while enjoying a lively community event filled with energy, friendly competition, and teamwork.
The event was planned by sophomore Dodge Campus Resident Assistant Johnny Do. The goal was to bring students together and create a fun, welcoming space. The sound of paddles, shoes, and cheers filled the air as teams faced off.
A Friendly and Active Event
The tournament followed a bracket format, with five teams playing for the top spot. The winners received a new pickleball paddle, a matching bag, and a set of pickleballs for each teammate.
Pickleball was chosen because it is easy to learn and fun for all skill levels. Students were able to enjoy the game at their own pace, either playing hard or relaxing with friends.
Voices from the Court
Johnny Do explained why events like this matter. “Living in the dorms, it can feel super lonely, or it can feel super exciting, depending however much effort you put in,” he said. “Pickleball is one of those sports where it is super easy to get into and it doesn’t require much out of you. You can play as intense as you want, or you can play as chill as you want. So it is pretty nice.”
Sophomore pre-health student Sam Jacobitz shared his excitement. “Pickleball is one of my favorite past times, it’s really fun to play,” he said. “It’s low stress, you’re just kind of playing with your friends.”
Jacobitz and teammate Jayden Mecseji went undefeated, winning the tournament and taking home the new pickleball gear.
Growing Community and Connection
This tournament helped students meet new people and have fun together. It made campus life feel more connected and welcoming. Pickleball proved to be a perfect choice, offering an easy, relaxed way for students to get involved.
Events like this show how simple games can build friendships and create good memories. Organizers hope to hold more community activities like this in the future.
