Why Delaware Neighborhoods Are Ditching Tennis for Pickleball Courts?

Pickleball Courts in Delaware Neighborhoods: New neighborhoods and parks in Delaware are adding pickleball courts. This growing trend is answering public demand for fun, easy, and social sports options. Many new and updated communities are choosing pickleball courts over tennis because of the game’s wide appeal and growing popularity.

Pickleball has quickly become a favorite in Delaware. More builders are putting courts in their plans. In places like Tower Hill in Lewes, homebuyers ask for pickleball, not tennis. Jeff Evans from Carl M. Freeman Companies shared, “No one who was there to learn about new developments asked about tennis. They wanted to know about designated pickleball courts because they all thought it’s much more fun, and because they weren’t as sore after playing pickleball as with other sports.”

Why Pickleball Is So Popular

Pickleball is easy to learn and fun to play. The ball moves slower than a tennis ball. Players use simple strokes with paddles, not racquets. The court is smaller too, so players do not need to run as much. That makes the game less tiring and easier for people of all ages.

The court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. It looks a little like tennis but uses paddles and a plastic ball. Courts can be built just for pickleball or made by marking off part of a tennis court. Many public parks now have outdoor and indoor pickleball courts.

A Growing Trend in New Communities

USA Pickleball Association says about 4.8 million people play the game in the U.S. An Architectural Digest article shared that pickleball courts are replacing golf courses as the top sports feature in new neighborhoods.

The Sports & Fitness Industry Association also showed a big rise in players. In 2019, pickleball had a 21.3 percent increase in players. This rising interest is leading to more courts being built in public parks and neighborhoods.

What This Means for Delaware
