Pickleball Courts in Galesburg: Galesburg plans to build six new pickleball courts at Rotary Park, 1625 W. Losey St., starting in late summer or early fall 2025. City leaders chose the site for its good parking, restrooms, and space. The project will give players a new, modern place to play outdoors.
The new courts will be made of concrete and built south of the playground area. They will replace the older, cracked courts at Bateman Park. The new complex will have six side-by-side courts, a fence around them, and small dividers between courts.
Why Rotary Park Was Chosen
Parks and Recreation Director Don Miles explained why Rotary Park was picked. “Other parks were considered, but lacked sufficient space, parking, or facilities,” Miles said. “Rotary checked all the boxes for what we wanted to accomplish.”
The park’s location also keeps the courts away from nearby homes. This reduces noise problems for neighbors. The space is large enough for courts, parking, and restrooms, making it a perfect fit.
Project Details and Timeline
The City Council will vote Monday on a $26,450 plan with Farnsworth Group, Inc. They will handle design, bidding, and construction checks. It will take 6-8 weeks to design the courts and 4 more weeks for bidding and final approval.
Construction should begin in August or September 2025. “Construction should take about two months, plus a few weeks for painting,” Miles said. The courts could open by late fall if work starts on time. Lighting is included in the plans, but may be added later if costs rise.
Plans for Current and Future Courts
Galesburg currently has six outdoor pickleball courts at Bateman Park, made from old tennis courts in 2021. It also offers three indoor courts at Hawthorne Gym for bad weather days.
“We’ll maintain Bateman’s courts until the cracks become unmanageable,” Miles said. “Looking ahead, we’re more focused on indoor court expansion than additional outdoor sites.” This means future projects will likely improve indoor play spaces.
What This Means for Galesburg
Adding six new courts will give Galesburg a total of 12 outdoor courts. This project will support the city’s fast-growing pickleball community. With more modern, safe, and well-placed courts, players will have better options to stay active and social.
The project shows how pickleball is growing in popularity in cities like Galesburg. As more people pick up the sport, having safe and easy-to-reach places to play is becoming important for local parks.
