Boulder City Construction Delays: Boulder City leaders spoke last week about long-awaited plans for a new indoor pool. Parks and Recreation Director Julie Calloway confirmed it won’t be built this summer. The city is still choosing a design firm and is months away from starting construction.
At a recent meeting, Mayor Joe Hardy asked Calloway about the pool’s final design. She explained it will follow suggestions from the ad hoc pool committee. The plan includes a 10-lane, 25-yard competition pool and a 30-foot-wide pool for classes and therapy.
What Will the Pool Be Like?
Mayor Hardy asked if the pools will be indoor or outdoor. Calloway said both pools will be indoors. Hardy then asked if building would start this summer. “Um, let’s see. Not exactly. It may start a summer, but not this summer. We’re still a few… many months out,” Calloway said.
She added, “We’re currently in the process of selecting the most qualified and responsive design firm for the new swimming pool project. The city’s website will have a page dedicated to pool construction information with regular updates to keep the residents informed every step of the way.”
More About Parks and Recreation
In her report, Calloway explained what the Parks and Recreation department does for Boulder City. “Parks and Recreation departments provide essential public services that add to the vitality of a community,” she said.
She described services like swim lessons, sports, golf, and events. She said the department also helps give local teenagers their first job. Two new staff members were also introduced — Michelle Fuller and Sierra Biggs.
The Challenge of Part-Time Staff
Calloway noted most of the department’s workers are part-time. “The success of our department relies heavily on the over 100 part-time employees that are truly indispensable for our operations,” she said.
She thanked staff for their hard work and spoke about the problem of keeping workers. Other jobs in town offer better pay and benefits, making it hard to find and keep part-timers.
Money and Water Issues
Calloway spoke about the department’s budget and money challenges. She said the city uses its general fund to help support youth sports and the current pool. She also said Boulder City’s two golf courses make money for the city.
Water use remains an issue too. A conservation project at Boulder Creek golf course is almost done. “At the municipal golf course, the turf reduction and new irrigation installation project will go out to bid with construction slated to begin in November,” she said. She explained the golf course water plan was made smaller after public complaints last year.
Pickleball Court Update
Calloway also gave a pickleball update. Four new courts at Veterans Memorial Park will start construction in April. When asked by Councilwoman Denise Ashurst about when they’ll be done, Calloway replied, “Construction is slated to be done 90 days after it begins.”
Why This Matters
This pool project is very important for Boulder City. It will offer more programs, lessons, and places for people to swim year-round. Even though it won’t start this summer, leaders are moving forward. People can expect updates soon as plans become final.
