Madison Township’s Pickleball Courts: The Kiwanis Club of Madison has donated a new sign for the pickleball courts at Veterans Park in Madison Township. Doug Ferguson, president of Madison Kiwanis, gave the sign to township trustees on April 8 during a workshop session before their regular meeting.
The sign reads, “Pickleball Courts — A cooperative project between Madison Township and Kiwanis of Madison.” Ferguson said he has already seen people enjoying the courts this year.
How the Courts Came to Be
The two pickleball courts opened in June 2023 at Veterans Park, 1747 Hubbard Road. The courts were built where a skate park once stood before being removed about 10 years ago.
Madison Kiwanis gave $2,500 to help cover the $20,000 cost of building the courts. Ferguson first suggested the idea to township trustees in early 2023.
A Simple Idea Turns Big
Ferguson shared how the idea started. He and his wife, Cheryl, were walking their dogs in Veterans Park last year. They noticed the empty skate park area and thought it would be perfect for pickleball.
“And both of us at the same time said, ‘That would be a great place for pickleball,’” Ferguson recalled. “So I took it back to Kiwanis and I talked to our members, and they were supportive.”
After getting support from the club, Ferguson brought the idea to township trustees during a meeting. He believed it would help improve the park space.
A Growing Community Space
Ferguson noted that people have already been using the courts this year. “I noticed people playing already this year on the courts,” he said.
The new sign is another step in celebrating this successful community project, showing the teamwork between the township and local groups.
What It Means for Madison
The pickleball courts give residents a fun, active place to play. The project turned an unused space into a spot where people gather, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club and township leaders, the park now has a new life. The sign honors the partnership that made it happen.
