Wright Township’s Pickleball Expansion: Wright Township supervisors voted to apply for a $250,000 grant to build two pickleball courts at the township park this week. If awarded, the new courts would be placed near the basketball courts in the lower section of the park to meet growing community demand.
Plan to Add Courts
Township secretary/treasurer Pamela Heard shared that she also plans to research a second funding opportunity through the state Greenways, Trails and Recreation program to help with the project.
The pickleball courts are part of the township park’s master plan, which was created with help from McLane Associates of Scranton. The plan was funded through a $19,000 grant, with the township covering half of the cost.
Meeting Community Needs
The Mountain Top area has only one outdoor pickleball court, located in Rice Township. There is often a wait to play, showing strong local interest in the sport. In addition, Slocum Township’s basketball and tennis courts are being repaved and lined to allow for five new pickleball courts: three on the basketball court and two on the tennis court.
Significance and Next Steps
If Wright Township secures the grant, the new courts will give more players a chance to enjoy the sport locally without long waits. Township officials hope the project will move forward soon to meet the needs of the growing pickleball community.
