How Pickleball Transformed Tucson’s Udall Park into a Community Hub

Udall Park’s Pickleball Community: Pickleball players of all ages are gathering daily at Udall Park, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road, making it one of Tucson’s busiest pickleball spots. The fast-growing sport is bringing people together through friendly competition, exercise, and strong community ties.

Growing a Welcoming Community

Longtime Udall Park player Mike Garrone shared how the sport has changed over the years.

“When I first started, it was just old people, older than me, and now it’s everybody.” – (Garrone)

Pickleball was first created in Washington state by three men looking for a way to entertain their children. Its easy-to-learn rules and fun atmosphere have helped it spread quickly across the country.

Social Media and Support

Udall’s pickleball community has more than 2,400 members on its Facebook page, started during the pandemic. “We are not here to sell anything but love and laughter,” the Facebook page says, stressing kindness and community.

“It keeps me motivated, helps me have a good time, and lets me meet lots of nice people.” – (Garrone)

Keeping Udall Free for All

Dominick DeCarlo, called the “Unofficial Mayor of Udall Pickleball,” spoke about keeping the courts free.

“We raise all the money and have benefit tournaments, and it all goes to TAP.” – (DeCarlo)

TAP, or Tucson Area Pickleball, funds improvements like benches, water fountains, lights, and shade structures through volunteer work and donations.

Health Benefits and Other Venues

Physical therapist Logan Vashon praised the health benefits of pickleball.

“It gets people moving. It improves agility, flexibility and cardiovascular health.” – (Vashon)

Besides Udall Park, other places to play include Corbett’s Sports Bar & Grill, offering court rentals, and the Donna R. Liggins Recreation Center, which charges a fee.

Welcoming Newcomers

New Tucson resident and University of Arizona student Devanshi Shukla found friends through pickleball.

“You can just show up by yourself, you can make many friends and even improve your game.” – (Devanshi Shukla)

Community Impact and Future

Udall Park’s courts remain busy almost every evening. The ongoing volunteer efforts and shared passion for pickleball have created a strong, welcoming community where players can stay active, make friends, and have fun.
